Slow long-weekend for traffic cops

Just one driver will be facing criminal charges for impaired driving following long weekend roadblocks by the Saanich police traffic safety unit.

“We’re always cautious and hopeful, with any long weekend, that we don’t have a lot of serious crashes because, traditionally, long weekends tend to result in severe crashes, not only in our own jurisdiction but throughout the province,” Staff Sgt. Terry Parker said. “We were cautiously optimistic that weren’t going to have any and (last) weekend we proved that.”

The traffic officers focused on high-crash areas, such as the Pat Bay and Trans Canada highways, as well as major roadways. The unit’s increased visibility could have been one factor that kept drivers in check over the B.C. Day long weekend.

A total of 11 collisions were recorded, none resulting in serious injuries.

Traffic safety officers had roadblocks set up Saturday and Monday nights in four different locations over the course of each evening.
