The driver of a Fiat hatchback crashed into a Garry oak tree on Foul Bay Road which resulted in the road’s closure for a good portion of Friday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., the Oak Bay Fire Department posted that Foul Bay Road between Brighton and McNeill Avenues was closed due a motor vehicle incident.

“The [driver] was travelling north on Foul Bay Road,” said Oak Bay Police Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties. “The cause of the crash is still under investigation and is possibly medical or fatigue.”

The driver was released from hospital later Friday afternoon.

The impact of the crash snapped the Garry oak and sent the top half of it, about 15 feet in length, crashing into the hydro pole. B.C. Hydro quickly assessed it was communications lines and not hydro lines affected.

The driver was “shaken up” and taken to the hospital, said firefighter John Popham.

“Neighbours and bystanders attended to the driver while we attended to the car and the wires,” said Popham. “The patient was removed from the scene.”

The road is expected to be closed until the tree is cleared.
