Sculptures find home in Glendale Gardens

Vancouver Island Sculptors Guild forms partnership with the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific

It’s a fitting home for a life-sized, bronze statue of Eve.

For artist David Hunwick who created the statue without having to give up a rib, a timely partnership with the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific has allowed his creation the right to a garden life.

“There is a natural synergy between what we do as sculptors and what they do as gardeners,” said Hunwick, the Vancouver Island Sculptors Guild president. “We have the same objectives, which is to create a beautiful environment that everyone can come to and enjoy.”

Throughout their gardens, the horticultural centre has carefully placed sculptures created by guild members.

“We are really excited,” executive director Roger Charles said. “(It’s a) visual contrast between man’s attempts to recreate life in his art – contrasted by nature’s ability to create art out of natural life.”

Hunwick is simply happy to have his art on display where he believes it belongs.

“Sculptures are best outside… It is a fantastic opportunity to have your work with such a beautiful background,” Hunwick said. “It is a living environment.”
