Saanich police shut down road after post-Canucks-game firecrackers mistaken for gunshots

Stanley Cup playoff revelry was grossly mistaken by neighbours for a man shooting birds with a firearm Monday evening after the residents reported hearing what sounded like gunshots.

Saanich police shut down the 600-block of Vanalman Avenue around 8 p.m., as the residence in question had a history of firearms-related calls.

However, police quickly determined that the loud bangs were not from a gun discharging, but rather firecrackers.

"We all support the Canucks in their run for the cup, but we ask residents to celebrate responsibly and be mindful of the people around them," Sgt. Dean Jantzen said.

The occupants of the home, two adult males, were spoken to about their actions. Charges are not being considered.
