You could call them orchid thiefs.

Saanich police continue to investigate two women they believe stole flowers from a Saanich grocery store.

“The call came in just after midnight [Monday] morning when two females were seen loading flowers from outside of Thrifty Foods at 3995 Quadra St. into their vehicle,” said Sgt. Julie Fast of Saanich Police.

Victoria Police spotted a matching vehicle a short time later and stopped it in the 800 block of Johnson Street.

“Flowers were spotted in the back seat and were later returned to [the store by VicPD],” said Fast. “No charges have been laid yet as it’s still under investigation.”

Fast said she did not know how many flowers were stolen, or the value of the blooms.

“I also can’t speculate on why they were stolen,” she said.

This case is not the first time Saanich police investigated a floral crime. In April 2018, police responded to the theft of four bonsai plants from Saanich’s Horticultural Centre of the Pacific.
