A resident out walking near Durrance Lake Tuesday morning sounded the alarm after spotting a fire.

“I heard a little crackling sound like the start of a fire,” said Rachelle, the walker who called in the blaze that claimed an outbuilding. She saw fire on an embankment and ran for another view to confirm. By the time she returned, the barn “burst into flames.”

“Unfortunately I couldn’t get in touch with the homeowners, who I could see were home,” she said.

A pair of dogs kept her outside the gate, but as she and another passerby awaited the Willis Point and Saanich fire departments, they continued to try and rouse the residents.

“Luckily there was nobody inside, no pets inside and everyone is safe,” Rachelle said.

Willis Point and Saanich fire departments were called to the outbuilding fire in the 500-block of Glen Close Road mid-morning on April 9.

Willis Point Volunteer Fire Department remained on scene as the fire flared up again, and crews drew water from Durrance Lake to douse the hot spots.
