Queenswood open house set for Tuesday

Queenswood
The future of the Queenswood retreat on Arbutus Road will be discussed at a public meeting next week.

A second public open house about the Queenswood rezoning proposal is set for Feb. 8.

The University of Victoria is applying to Saanich for a rezoning of six hectares of land located at Arbutus Road and Queenswood Drive.

The property, within walking distance of the university, was purchased from the Sisters of St. Ann last year.

UVic has a plan for the land, which now houses a retreat, a residential dwelling and a care facility.

The Sisters of St. Ann have the option of staying in the care facility until Jan. 1, 2013. The lease on the building housing the retreat expired last month.

The first meeting drew more residents than expected, said Cadboro Bay Residents Association president Rick Page.

“We’re hoping to get some kind of conditions in place,” said Page, who adds that another strong turn-out is likely at next week’s meeting.

Neil Connelly of UVic’s campus planning and sustainability will lead presentations on environmental protection, roadway and traffic issues regarding the rezoning application. Feedback from the first open house will also be a part of the presentations, Connelly said.

The meeting runs Feb. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. Presentations will take place at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church Hall, 2909 St. George’s Ln. More information is available at
