Police investigating drywall company after slew of complaints

Two companies, Mac Drywall and Cut-Rite Drywall, which have the same contact information, are being named as businesses to watch out for when hiring someone to help with home renovations. The phone number listed for the business is no longer in service.

A drywaller, advertised online as being “professional, detail oriented … with over 20 years experience,” is causing headaches for clients, warn Saanich police after six victims have come forward complaining about the services the company fails to provide.

Two companies, Mac Drywall and Cut-Rite Drywall, which have the same contact information, are being named as businesses to watch out for when hiring someone to help with home renovations. The phone number listed for the business is no longer in service.

“Generally speaking the target is small home-owner-type jobs, not big commercial jobs,” said Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen.

Clients report having found the companies online or in classified ads, and will make arrangements to meet.

The contractor will come to the home, make work arrangements, sign a contract and then request money to purchase materials. “If you’re redoing a room, you shouldn’t be handing out money till a job’s done,” Jantzen said.

Complainants say the drywaller either returns once, and does shoddy work or doesn’t complete the job, or he never returns.

Jantzen said the six cases they’re aware of only came to light last week, though he’s not sure how far back the incidents date.

“This is more just a public warning about those companies. We don’t want to put a timeline or a start date on this,” he said.

The Better Business Bureau website lists nine complaints against Cut-Rite or Mac Drywall, saying there’s “a pattern of complaints involving consumers agreeing to hire the company, making a deposit and the company not returning to begin the work. When consumers request the return of the deposit the company refuses.”

Jantzen asks anyone involved in an incident such as this, regardless of which jurisdiction in Greater Victoria you live in, to contact Const. Karen Phillips in the Saanich police fraud division at 250-475-4377.
