A motorcyclist clocked at more than 170 km/h in a 60 zone has lost his ride for the foreseeable future.
The man’s Italian motorcycle was impounded after police pulled the driver over during a targeted enforcement near Durrance Lake.
Around 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Saanich's traffic safety unit was stationed along Willis Point Road near Wallace Drive when the laser speed reader captured the red, Ducati motorbike travelling 170 km/h.
The officer put down the radar gun to prepare to pull the motorcyclist over when it sped past "well in excess of 200 km/h."
The motorcyclist was slowed down, further along West Saanich Road, by traffic in the area, and police were able to pull him over.
The driver was arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was issued an excessive speeding ticket.
Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the man, a 38-year-old Esquimalt resident, has two previous infractions for excessive speeding and five other speeding related tickets.
The motorcycle was impounded and police are looking to have the bike held under civil forfeiture legislation.
