Pellet gun in park raises alarm

Two teens got a slap on the wrist last week after being caught with a pellet rifle in Uplands Park.

At 6:45 p.m. April 19, someone called police to report two men with a gun in the park. Officers entered the park from different directions and stopped two teens – an 18 year old and a 17 year old, the latter of whom was carrying a pellet gun.

The younger teen’s parent was contacted and the parent promised to have the gun destroyed.

“These types of calls are very dangerous, as responding (officers)  do not generally know whether or not a firearm is an air rifle or actual firearm – and must assume the worst for their own safety and that of the public,” said Sgt. Rob Smith.

Pellet guns are not illegal to carry, but firing them violates Oak Bay bylaws.
