Ousted pumpkins embraced by Oak Bay

The Pumpkin Art event is on the move again.

Starting in 2002, loyal fans have followed the Halloween display from artist John Vickers’ backyard, to Government House and finally to the Victoria Truth Centre, after a two-year homeless hiatus.

Now, the 600-plus collection of carved plastic-mould pumpkins is heading to Oak Bay to be displayed along the avenue. The Oak Bay Business Association is also providing storage for the pumpkins year round.

The pumpkins will be joining the association’s Christmas decorations in storage space under Athlone Court, said spokesperson Heather Leary.

The plan is to display some of the pumpkins in shop windows for a couple of weeks leading up to Halloween, she said. “Then, a large bunch of them would be (set up for display) on the front and back lawn of City Hall for four days.”

In January, Vickers learned the Truth Centre would no longer host the display.
