A weapon spotted earlier this week in an Oak Bay business was a cap gun, say Oak Bay police.

Officers located the man who admitted to officers he had done what witnesses reported but meant no harm. He told police the weapon was a toy cap gun. Officers spoke with another impartial witness who stated that the manhad shown him the gun earlier in the day and confirmed that it was a toy, though it certainly looked real from a distance.

When located, the suspect male was acting in a manner which caused officers to believe that he was in need of medical care. He was apprehended by officers and transported to hospital for treatment.

Oak Bay police are investigating after a man who appeared to be carrying a visible small handgun perused merchandise at an Oak Bay establishment.

On Monday, Sept. 25 around 7:15 p.m. a man entered a business in the 2100 block of Oak Bay Avenue carrying a clear plastic bag which contained what appeared to be a small handgun. The man was casually holding the bag, not pointing it in any specific direction. After checking out merchandise within the business, the male departed the building. At no time were any gestures made that might have indicated a specific threat to anyone inside the store.

The man is described as Caucasian, 40 to 60 years old, slim build, around five-foot-eight inches tall, with an unshaven face, salt and pepper hair and a healing cut on his forehead along with scrapes on his cheek. He was wearing a blue baseball cap with a “Canada A” logo, blue jeans and a dark jacket over a white button up shirt. He was also carrying a royal blue and black backpack with the faded name “Scott” written on it.

“There have been no other reports of similar incidents in the area,” said Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties in a news release. “The Oak Bay Police Department responded immediately with a police dog and Forensic Ident Services. The investigation is ongoing and we are working with other police agencies to identify any similar occurrences and a suspect.”

Police ask that anyone who observes anyone matching this description not to approach or confront him. Call your local police department immediately. Police ask anyone who may have witnessed this event or has information that could assist the investigation to contact the Oak Bay Police at 250-592-2424 or call Crimestoppers 1-800-222-TIPS.
