Oak Bay officers deal with deer impaled on fence

Theft from vehicles, bike swipe round out cop calls for the week

A deer impaled on a fence Friday required police intervention.

On March 1, Oak Bay police officers were called to a residence in the 2600 block of Burdick Street where a deer impaled itself on an aluminum fence post. The deer was dispatched and removed from the scene.

Thieves hit Oak Bay cars

Theft from vehicle continues to plague Oak Bay.

Police responded to nine last week, where loose change, rugby cleats and sunglasses were among the items reported stolen.

Thefts were reported in the 3000 block of Lansdowne Road, 1100 block of Victoria Avenue, 2000 block of Carrick Street, 2100 block of Newton Street, 500 block of Beach Drive, 3200 block of Beach Drive, 2400 block of Cadboro Bay Road, 2100 block of Sutherland Road and 700 block of Falkland Road.

The police remind residents to lock their vehicles and remove items of value and secure them in a proper place.

Most stolen items from vehicles include smartphones and other electronics, work tools, credit cards and identification, stereo equipment, cash, car parts, garage door openers, sunglasses and keys.

Police offer tips such as treating your keys like cash. Never leave keys unguarded, such as at the gym or at the office. Park in secure, well-lit areas. Always lock the doors and close the windows. When possible, try to park in areas near pedestrian traffic.

Remove all valuables. Shopping bags, tools, spare change, electronics and brief cases can all tempt a thief. If it can be stolen, put it in the trunk.

Keep the garage door opener out of sight or take it with you.

Use an electronic engine immobilizer or steering wheel lock. Additional anti-theft devices can help secure your vehicle, particularly if it was manufactured before 2007.

Don’t store a spare key in the vehicle. Keep spare keys at home or on your person.

Bike swiped

March 1, Oak Bay Police received a report of bike taken from behind a business in the 2200 block of Oak Bay Avenue. The suspect stole an 18-speed, small Norco men’s bicycle.
