Propane, briquettes and gas are fine, but wood-burning fires remain off-limits on Oak Bay beaches.
Police were called to a blaze on a local beach on Jan. 25 shortly before 11 p.m. and found a group of people around a small wood fire in a steel fire pit.
Oak Bay does not allow outdoor wood fires, at the beach or in the backyard – barbecues and other specifically designed cooking appliance. Portable gas fires are allowed at the beach from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The call was among 38 calls for police service the week of Jan. 23 to 30 in Oak Bay.

Sticky fingers cost $2,000 in merchandise
Oak Bay police hope to find a woman accused of slipping several pairs of sunglasses up her sleeve.
Officers were called to a business in the 2000-block of Cadboro Bay Road on Jan. 27 at 3:30 p.m. where staff said a person selected several pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses, sleeved them, then left without paying.
The suspect is described as blonde woman in her 30s, about 5’2” with a slim build, wearing a black satin jacket with the letters L and K on the back, black ripped skinny jeans and red boots with white soles.
About $2,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.
