Nominations now open for Great Teachers

Readers encouraged to nominate a teacher who has made an impact on their lives

Gerry Denis

Do you know a teacher in the Greater Victoria area who deserves special recognition? We can all fondly recall those special teachers that took their profession and their students to the highest level. Whether by creating the spark that fuels a lifelong passion, by instilling a confidence or curiosity where none existed before or by simply imparting the tools that enable us to grow and learn, teachers play an invaluable role in shaping our futures.

Black Press Community News Media is partnering with Staples to acknowledge those extraordinary teachers who have left lasting impressions. The Great Teachers recognition program aims to honour three teachers, one each from elementary, middle and secondary schools, who will be recognized at a special event in June and profiled in upcoming editions of this newspaper.

Black Press associate group publisher Oliver Sommer said the initiative is a great way to acknowledge the incredible work teachers do in educating the children in their care.

“We all have memories of teachers that have contributed to making a huge difference in preparing us for the paths we follow and the way we view the world, and the incredible results they achieve through their dedication and hard work,” Sommer said.

“Black Press and its partner Staples, together with sponsorship from Camosun College, are proud to help honour teachers whose efforts have gone above and beyond in forging better communities.”

Gerry Denis, general manager of Staples West Shore location, said the company is pleased for the opportunity to recognize the important work teachers do.

“You can’t underestimate the significant role of teachers and the valuable contributions they make in the education and development of our children,” said Denis. “Staples has always been closely involved in raising money for schools and extending a helping hand to kids, and we’re proud to continue that tradition through the School Tools program. I remember several teachers in particular that had a profound affect on me and the direction I’ve taken. They made school a rewarding, enjoyable experience that will always be a part of who I am.”

Selecting three teachers is a daunting task when you consider that there are so many deserving candidates in the Greater Victoria region, so Black Press is asking you, our readers, to get involved in the process.

Go to SaanichNews.com/contests and share in your own words why you think the teacher you nominate is so deserving, what grade they teach and what school they serve. The deadline for nominations is May 29.
