Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch has been named to the Victoria Regional Transit Commission (VRTC).

Murdoch takes the seat previously occupied by Esquimalt Mayor Barbara Desjardins. Murdoch said that Oak Bay and Esquimalt traditionally rotate holding seats on the commission.

“I really like the regional work,” Murdoch said. “One of the positive aspects of being a councillor and mayor is being part of these regional pieces. A lot of good work gets done on them, so I expect this one to be no different.”

The commission represents transit service in Greater Victoria, making recommendations to BC Transit on routes and service levels. The commission is also responsible for local transit funding.

Despite having a seat on the commission, Murdoch doesn’t expect Oak Bay to get any special treatment.

“I’m appointed from Oak Bay but my job is to represent the interest of the entire region’s transit needs, and that’s true of all the regional bodies,” Murdoch said. “I still have to look after the interest of Esquimalt as much as I do Oak Bay.”
