Man hit by car in the mood for hugs

'Victim' refuses medical aid, declines to file police report

A man hit by a car near Mayfair Shopping Centre Wednesday afternoon stayed at the scene of the accident just long enough to hug the woman who had struck him.

When Victoria police responded to multiple reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a car at Douglas Street and Tolmie Avenue at 12:41 p.m., the victim had left.

The female driver said she was driving eastbound on Tolmie Avenue near the mall when a man ran out from bushes along the roadside, directly into her path.

She was unable to stop in time and hit the man with the right front corner of her car.

The pedestrian fell, and when the driver went to help him, “the ‘victim’ immediately got back up onto his feet, gave the woman a hug and then walked off northbound on Douglas Street,” Deputy Police Chief John Ducker reported on the department’s operations blog.

The man, who police say is well-known to them, was found soon after in Saanich, but declined medical assistance and did not file a police report.
