One man is facing charges after a resident reported suspicious behaviour to police.

At approximately 10 a.m. on March 21, police received a report from a resident about a suspicious man with a bicycle near the 800-block of St. Patrick Street. Officers located a man who matched the description given by the caller and he was stopped for not wearing a helmet. A search found tools or instruments that could be used to commit a crime, contrary to a probation order. A folding pocketknife and several pieces of identification that did not belong to the man were also found.

He was charged with failing to comply with a probation order and possession of property obtained by crime and was released with additional probation conditions.

That was one of the 62 calls for service the Oak Bay Police Department responded to during the week of March 20 to 27.

Municipal yard tagged

Another tip from a resident led police to vandalism at the municipal yard.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on March 25, a resident reported seeing a group of teenagers – two boys and one girl – in a red vehicle drive up to the yard at the end of Goldsmith Avenue. Spray paint was applied to the cinder block wall adjacent to the footpath.

Police attempted to locate the suspects without success and the investigation is ongoing.

Propane tanks nicked from The Avenue

At 5:45 p.m. on March 23, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report that three propane tanks had been stolen from outside a business in the 2000-block of Oak Bay Avenue. Worth about $70 each, the owner reported the tanks had been stolen at some point between March 19 and 23.

Hefty ticket for uninsured driver

Traffic enforcement on Henderson Road led police to an uninsured driver. An officer was checking for licensed drivers and insured vehicles shortly before 3 p.m. on March 23 and discovered a vehicle that had not been insured since October 2022. The owner was issued a ticket for $598.

If you have information regarding these or any crimes, please call the Oak Bay Police Department at 250-592-2424 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
