The Victoria Police Department has arrested a man for sexual assault aboard BC Transit buses.

In a statement Feb. 24, officers began investigating after a young woman came forward earlier this week. She shared her experience online, which prompted other women to come forward with similar experiences. One post, which has been shared widely on Facebook, alleges that a man that frequently takes the Route 50 bus from Langford to Victoria was following female passengers aboard the bus.

The Victoria Police co-operated with BC Transit staff, Saanich Police, and West Shore RCMP. Police are not releasing more details at this time.

The suspect was released on tele-bail with conditions that include staying away from bus stops and buses. He will also be monitored to ensure compliance.

Anyone who has experienced a similar assault on a bus should call the VicPD non-emergency line at 250 995 7654, through the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre at 250 383 3232, your doctor’s office or emergency room. If you are aboard a bus and see or experience something concerning, tell the driver, and if you are in danger, dial 9-1-1.

To report information on this or other incidents anonymously, dial Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
