Tuesday’s winter storm watch from Environment Canada became a warning early Wednesday adding snow and freezing rain to the mix for most of Vancouver Island.

The winter storm warning issued by Environment Canada around 4 a.m. on Jan. 5 warns residents to watch for adverse heavy snow Wednesday evening becoming mixed with rain or patchy freezing rain Thursday morning.

Snowfall is varied, with accumulations ranging from 15 to 25 cm and freezing rain over inland and east Vancouver Island and the Malahat portion of Highway 1.

The alert warns of rapidly accumulating snow, possibly affecting Thursday morning commutes with an added risk of freezing rain for the Fraser Valley.

The storm warning covers central and east Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands, Greater Victoria and the Sunshine Coast.

The warning comes on the heels of a special weather statement covering most of Vancouver Island, of possible heavy convective snow flurries, with a sudden reduction in visibility that hit Monday night and was expected to last into Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday morning could prove as icy for drivers as Tuesday was across Greater Victoria. Temperatures are set to dip to 1 C with snow or rain Tuesday night with a high of 3 C predicted Wednesday.
