L driver clocked going double in Oak Bay 40 km/h zone, fails alcohol test

An Oak Bay police officer schooled a man with a learner’s licence after spotting a speeder shortly before midnight on Jan. 20.

The officer conducting traffic enforcement along Cadboro Bay Road spotted a vehicle southbound going 90 km/h in a 40 km/h zone, according to a department release.

The cop stopped the driver and a 26-year-old man was issued a $368 ticket for excessive speed, a $109 ticket for failing to display an L and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The driver provided a breath sample and was subsequently issued a 12-hour driving prohibition, as part of the graduated licensing program in B.C. drivers with L or N licences are subject to a zero alcohol restriction.

Gas thief targets municipal vehicles

A parked bus was the target of thieves near Oak Bay Recreation Centre. The afternoon of Jan. 16 police were called for a mischief report in the 1900-block of Bee Street when a bus owned by the District of Oak Bay had its fuel line tampered with and gas appeared to have been stolen. On Jan. 19, a municipal employee reported a second vehicle had its fuel siphoned from the same location. The gas tank had been drilled and fuel was drained from under the vehicle, resulting in approximately $250 in damage.

Glass graffiti

Police have no suspects after someone etched graffiti into a glass door at the Monterey Recreation Centre. The damage, about $500 worth, was discovered the morning of Jan. 17.

Dragoneye strikes again

On Jan. 20 around 11:41 p.m., an Oak Bay officer was conducting speed enforcement on Foul Bay Road at Newton Street. The officer spotted a vehicle moving faster than the limit.The department’s laser device called a DragonEye Speed Lidar showed the vehicle moving 73 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The officer pulled the driver over and smelled alcohol on his breath. After a roadside screening, the 50-year-old man was issued a 90-day licence suspension, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days. The driver was fined $196 for speeding.

Cash, gift cards swiped from car

Oak Bay police were called to the 2900-block of Henderson Road the morning of Jan. 16 for a vehicle break in. A resident reported their vehicle had been broken into sometime over the weekend and $100 in cash and $150 in gift cards were stolen.
