Oak Bay’s injured eaglet is faring well in rehabilitation, and that’s where it will learn to fly.

A resident discovered the young eagle in the tall grass near its nest behind the police and fire building on Monterey Avenue during a wind storm the evening of May 23. With the help of Oak Bay Police Department officers took the bird to Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital. The eaglet was given emergency care and transferred to BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Metchosin the next morning.

“We have decided to wait until she is fully flighted before returning her to her family,” said Christina Carrières, senior wildlife rehabilitator at Wild ARC. “This way, we will limit the disturbance at the nest. Often, if the nest is disturbed, the parents will abandon the nest for future years to come.”

Wild ARC says residents are keeping an eye on the second baby and the centre plans to release the one in Metchosin then.
