A smokestack built in the early 1900s as part of a cement factory owned by the Butchart family, has partially collapsed after a recent storm. James Younger was walking in Gowlland Tod park on Tuesday, Jan. 29, when he saw the structure had been damaged.
“It looks like the top 20 feet have blown off.” he said. “I was saddened to see that as we’ve lost a couple of other big icons. We lost the Garry oak tree in Saanichton. People were so upset about that, as it’s the biggest tree and of great renown here.”
