The federal government has granted Surjit Bhandal another opportunity to apply for permanent residency in Canada. Her application was denied and a deportation order was sent. A deportation date has not be set.

Bhandal will reapply for the Permanent Residence on Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds. While this process continues the deportation order is still standing.

"Any day the order can go through and she'll be sent back to India, then if she wins she could come back," said MP Randall Garrison. "I am hoping the government will play fair."

Bhandal has no family India and there are no senior care facilities. She has limited mobility and needs help when walking. She is unable to fix her own meals.

Garrison was notified of the new opportunity for Bhandal's family, but was not given a reason on the change in decision.

Bhandal lives with her nephew, his wife and their children. She raised her nephew and he calls her his mom. The family was living in Langford, but recently moved to Saanich.
