Esquimalt Fire Rescue was called to extricate a 30-year-old Langford man from his car after he drove into a parked car and retaining wall in Esquimalt early Sunday morning. The driver was hospitalized and remains in intensive care.

Victoria police are investigating speed and alcohol as possible causes of two of three serious traffic collisions in Victoria and Esquimalt over the weekend.

In the first, a 32-year-old View Royal man and his 24-year-old Saanich partner were hospitalized early Saturday morning after their Volkswagen Jetta was rear-ended at a high rate of speed by a Nissan Versa.

"After the collision, the suspect driver of the Nissan got out of the vehicle, locked the doors and left the area, stating that she lived nearby," said Const. Mike Russell, Victoria police spokesperson.

A 31-year-old Saanich woman arrived at police headquarters later in the day, claiming to be the driver.

Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash at Haultain Street and Roseberry Avenue.

A 30-year-old Langford man lost control of his Honda Prelude and crashed into a parked car and retaining wall in Esquimalt on Sunday around 2:30 a.m.

The driver was hospitalized and remains in intensive care following the crash in the 800-block of Rockheights Ave.

"The force of the collision was so extreme that the majority of the car was destroyed, and Esquimalt Fire Rescue had to be called to extract the driver," Russell said.

A 26-year-old Kitimat man drove his Mazda MX3 through a red light at the corner of Quadra and Finlayson streets on Sunday around 7:15 a.m.

The vehicle was hit by a 31-year-old Saanich woman driving a Ford Explorer who had the right of way.

"Both vehicles suffered major damage and the Mazda was actually tossed onto the curb," said Russell. "The driver (of the Mazda) was lucky to escape with no injuries."

The woman suffered minor leg injuries. The man was given a $167 ticket for disobeying a red light at an intersection.
