Drunk drivers cause mayhem Wednesday afternoon

Cyclist barricades driver after he crashes and tries to flee

VicPD kept busy chasing two drunk drivers around the city yesterday afternoon with help from a bold cyclist.

In the first incident, a young woman was reported to police after she stumbled through a B.C. liquor store near Blanshard Street and Hillside Avenue, then drove away around 3:20 p.m.

When she was pulled over, she backed her car into the police cruiser. The woman was more than five times over the legal blood alcohol limit, said Const. Mike Russell.

A 21-year-old woman was released on a promise to appear in court.

The second incident occurred around 6 p.m. when VicPD tried to stop an erratic driver of a Ford Aerostar near Quadra Street and Empress Avenue.

The driver fled and slammed the van into a parked vehicle in the 1100-block of Empress Avenue.

A passing cyclist who narrowly missed being hit by the driver gave chase, using his bicycle as a barricade until police arrived.

Serle Rogers, a 44-year-old Victoria man, is facing 10 charges including driving while impaired, dangerous operation of motor vehicle and driving while prohibited.

“VicPD would like to remind drivers that if you drink and drive, you will be caught, hopefully before you kill someone,” Russell said.
