Crews battle fire at Saanich home

Early reports indicate fire started in the home’s chimney

Heavy smoke poured out of a Victoria home Wednesday evening, near the corner of Obed Avenue and Donald Street in Saanich.

The call came in around 5 p.m. and emergency crews were on scene with at least four fire engines and a dozen firefighters.

Early reports indicate the fire could have started in the chimney.

“It’s a little early to tell (but) it looks towards where the chimney was. The fireplace was in use and investigators will spend the next day looking at and confirming the cause,” said Saanich Fire Captain David Elder.

Crews have confirmed that no one was at home when the fire began and no one was injured.

Traffic was blocked at the corner of Obed Avenue and Donald Street as crews worked the scene.

More to come.
