Strathmore Road and Goldstream Avenue were shut down after emergency crews were called a little after 8 p.m. Tuesday for a major water main break.

A water main break at the corner of Goldstream Avenue and Strathmore Road has caused flooding to several homes in the area.

Some residences have been evacuated after a hole surfaced on Strathmore Road and traffic was being diverted off Goldstream Avenue between Jacklin and Peatt roads. Traffic was expected to return to normal for the morning commute.

BC Transit was brought in Tuesday night to provide shelter for anybody who was evacuated from their homes.

Emergency crews were called to the area just after 8 p.m. Tuesday after the eight-inch pipe broke. Eleven homes in the area and one condo building are without water. The Capital Region District anticipates water service will be reinstated sometime Wednesday morning.

When water service is restored, the CRD, in consultation with Island Health, has issued a boil water advisory for residents in the impacted area.

The boil water advisory will be removed when Island Health is satisfied the drinking water does not pose a health concern. In the meantime, residents are asked to boil all household tap water vigorously for one minute.
