Council chambers should be busy tonight in Oak Bay.

Two presentations are scheduled this evening after council begins at 7 p.m. After minutes are adopted, council will hear a presentation from Grade 5 students from GNS about single use plastics (SUPs). Students will present facts about the increased use of SUPs over the later part of the 20th century, and showcase alternatives that could help minimize our impact on the planet.

After they’re done, council will see another presentation about what’s slated to become Oak Bay’s first Heritage Conservation Area (HCA)—the Prospect neighbourhood.

According to the memorandum attached to the 77 page proposed guidelines, “a Heritage Conservation Area is created to provide long-term protection for a distinctive area that is known to contain special heritage value and/or heritage character… A Heritage Conservation Area allows the District of Oak Bay to protect buildings, other structures, land or features that contribute to the overall character of a neighbourhood.”

Murdoch chairs the Heritage Conservation working group, and his name accompanies the presentation. The next step for the proposed HCA is to have the Official Community Plan amended to include the Prospect HCA.

Also on the agenda tonight is the Oak Bay Tea Party. They are seeking $7,000 and a public occupancy permit.
