Sightings in View Royal prompt warning to residents

Two cougar sightings late Friday night had West Shore RCMP combing View Royal for a large feline, with no success.

Just before 11 p.m., RCMP received a report of a cougar sighting by Atkins Avenue and Six Mile Road near the Galloping Goose Trail.

Police went into the area to look for the cougar but couldn’t find it.

Later, at about 12:30 a.m., Saturday morning another report came in from a male driver who said he had hit a cougar near the intersection of Helmcken Road and Trans Canada Highway.

Still alive, the cougar was then seen heading towards Fort Victoria RV Park.

In January, a cougar was spotted in the woods near View Royal elementary. Conservation officers did not find the cougar in that incident.

Police say anyone in the areas where the cougar was spotted to be careful and to report any sighting to either the RCMP or the conservation service at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
