Oak Bay Councillor Eric Zhelka announces he will seek re-election to council in the upcoming municipal election.

“I have been proud and honored to serve the district as a councillor for the past four years and look forward to accomplishing much more during the next term,” said Zhelka.

Establishing clear policy to guide development in Oak Bay, ensuring the district’s financial viability and sustainability, and improving transparency in council are some of Zhelka’s outlined goals.

“There are some very important issues that must be addressed to protect the character and ensure the future harmony and stability of our community,” said Zhelka.

Priority needs to be given to the district’s aged and deteriorating infrastructure that requires upgrades at a cost of millions of dollars and future development in the district must have clear goals and guidelines, said Zhelka.

“Oak Bay’s housing needs must be identified and defined. Some of council’s decisions regarding housing and development in the past have been inconsistent, with too much reliance on spot zoning - resulting in very inefficient processes with staff and advisory committees unsure how to proceed,” said Zhelka. “The uncertain wording of the Official Community Plan must be clarified by following through on the rewrite of our by-laws and policies so that its objectives and outcomes are clearly spelled out for residents and developers.”
