Morning bathroom fire sends Oak Bay High students home early

Students who need personal items from the building to return Friday afternoon

Oak Bay High students are on an early weekend after a Friday (Feb. 7) morning fire at the school.

Students and staff were evacuated from the building, and families alerted, according to the school district.

“As recommended by the fire department, students and staff are not to reenter the building and, as a result, have been dismissed for the rest of the day,” the Greater Victoria School District told the Oak Bay News. “We thank the school staff, students, and Oak Bay Fire Department for their swift response and evacuation.”

The fire was quickly contained to the washroom and no injuries were reported, Oak Bay police said.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, with the forensic section of Saanich police aiding the local investigation, in collaboration with fire officials.

No suspects have been identified.
