Drivers will share south bridge during Highway 1 closure in Saanich

During the closure, traffic leaving Victoria will be redirected to the adjacent southbound bridge

Work is ongoing on the Highway 1 bridges over Colquitz Creek, Burnside Road in Saanich.

Ongoing work on the bridge over the Colquitz River means northbound drivers on Highway 1 will be diverted Saturday night.

During the closure – April 26 at 7 p.m. to April 27 at 9 a.m. – traffic leaving Victoria will be redirected to the adjacent southbound bridge.

“There will be one-way traffic in each direction on the southbound bridge while the northbound bridge is closed,” the Ministry of Transportation advised on Friday morning.

A reduced speed limit of 50 km/h continues with traffic-management personnel expected on site to guide drivers through the detour. Drivers are reminded to follow all signage and exercise caution in construction zones.

The Highway 1 bridges widening project will seismically retrofit both existing two-lane bridges over Burnside Road, as well as establish a dedicated bus lane. Pomerleau Inc. was awarded the construction contract in March 2024.

“Widening the Colquitz River bridges will make for a more reliable, efficient commute for south Islanders while protecting local waterways and ecosystems,” the ministry promises.

Work anticipated over the next month includes preparation for opening a third lane along the north bridge; paving the western shoulder, lane closures and a temporary crosswalk on Burnside Road West.
