Barging through choppy seas off Sidney

Willis Rooke has seen it rougher

As it happens from time to time, the wind whips up the water around Vancouver Island and Monday saw the Salish Sea off of Sidney a little choppy.

Heading in to Sidney in the mid-afternoon was a small boat and barge, piloted by Willis Rooke, owner of Willis Rooke Marine. Bobbing up and down, side-to-side in the waves, the little boat appeared to expertly guide the barge, carrying trucks and recyclables, toward shore.

Rooke used his boat to push the barge into the Sidney boat launch, where a flatbed truck was waiting to take an older vehicle, leaded with metal, off his hands.

Rooke said he was transporting the goods from Sidney Island, adding he’s seen much rougher weather in the Salish Sea in his years plying the waters around the Saanich Peninsula.
