Letter: Deer as an election issue

In just the last week several members of our family including small children, have come perilously close to two potentially tragic accidents caused by deer bounding out into the road. In this time I have also watched in horror as a large buck ate his way through our neighbor’s garden, then defecated on the lawn as he moved unchallenged to the next yard.

In just the last week several members of our family including small children, have come perilously close to two potentially tragic accidents caused by deer bounding out into the road. In this time I have also watched in horror as a large buck ate his way through our neighbor’s garden, then defecated on the lawn as he moved unchallenged to the next yard.

Here’s the thing: if a pack of wild dogs was moving through our neighborhoods in twos and threes trashing our gardens, leaving piles of dog poop on the grass, chasing our small pets and running out into the street at will, we would not be having a conversation about a ridiculous birth control plan to gradually limit their numbers.

Enough is enough. I encourage voters to make the deer problem an issue in the upcoming municipal elections and to vote for candidates who are willing to put human safety and protection of property over the ‘rights’ of deer, just as any reasonable person would do if we were talking about dogs or any other animal.
