Salt Spring launches national award

Winner will receive $10,000 and a one-month residency on the Gulf Island

The inaugural Salt Spring National Art Prize launches its inaugural year in a unique fashion.

The top prize offers $10,000 and one-month artist residency on the picturesque Gulf Island known as one of Canada’s premier art communities.

“This is a good moment for Canadian art. I’ll be looking for art with rigour that is interesting, that is technically sound and is fluid and dynamic that brings context to global, cultural and local issues,” said Vicky Chainey Gagnon, Newfoundland and Labrador juror.

Artists will remain anonymous to the jurors.

“An art prize like this that is national in scope is a good thing, allowing for a bigger audience to participate,” said Holger Kalberg, a Manitoba juror.

“The work I might champion will be challenging and current; art that pushes the boundaries of the medium.”

A total of 50 works will appear in SSNAP’s artist collective show catalogue. Original works will be exhibited and up for sale at SSI’s Mahon Hall from Sept. 25 through to Oct. 26. The list of finalists will be announced on Sept. 25 with winners announced at a gala on Oct. 24.

SSNAP welcomes artists Canada-wide to submit original two-dimensional and three-dimensional works between now and May 31.
