St. Matthias church officially launches The Chapel Gallery Friday evening.

The Chapel at St. Matthias, recently renovated as a multipurpose worship and art gallery space, invites the local arts community to exhibit a variety of visual art mediums such as painting, drawing and fabric arts, and the local community to enjoy this art. The very creation of art can be, by nature, a personal, sacred act which when shared can be transforming and enriching.

The Chapel Gallery plans to show a wide range of art with an emphasis on works that are socially relevant, contemplative and reflective.

Contemporary Artist Jill Ehlert exhibits ‘SeaForms: The Nature of Creation’ from Sept. 21 to Oct. 31.

Ehlert’s new mixed media collage series explores intertidal ecosystems; their cycles of growth, decay and deterioration. Japanese “Washi” paper is manipulated through contemporary techniques of burning and piercing holes, tearing and cutting. These processes yield abstract forms that echo the shapes, patterns and processes of this natural world.

The Chapel Gallery opening reception is Sept. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30, at St. Matthias church, 600 Richmond Ave. Visit stmatthiasvictoria.ca/chapelgallery for more.
