Until Nov. 15, the Sidney Museum is featuring an exhibit honouring the service and sacrifices by members of the armed forces. The exhibit is created by several local museums, private collectors, and veterans’ associciations. The museum is at 2423 Beacon Ave. and open from 10-4 p.m. daily.

The First and Last Chance Christmas Fair is happening this weekend at the Mary Winspear Centre. Find handmade artwork and crafts from over 80 local artists from 10-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10-4 p.m. on Sunday. Old Country Fare is catering and there will be live smooth guitar music, a draw for a $200 shopping spree and hourly door prizes. It’s $4 for a weekend pass.

The On the Ridge Craft Fair is at Cordova Bay United Church Hall (813 Claremont Ave.) from 10-4 p.m., where for $2 entry you can browse jewelry, pottery, Christmas items, clothes, soaps, wooden items, and more. There’s hot soup, carrot cake, and live music.

The Capital City Syncopators play Northern Quarter at 1724 Douglas St. starting at 9 p.m. Enjoy the food and listen to a modern take on prohibition-era jazz and country swing, and some hits from the 1980s. By donation.

The downtown Victoria MEC store (1450 Government St.) is doing their weekly free group run. Meet at the store’s bike patio at 9 a.m., beginners welcome. There are two pace groups, and the routes are new each week. Routes and info here.

SUNDAY, NOV. 5

If you look closely, there are four welcoming totems that dot Central Saanich, and they will be joined by a fifth and final one, ‘The Protector’, at Central Saanich Municipal Hall. It will be unveiled Sun., Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. by the parking lot of the Fire Museum.

Join Oak Bay Parks staff and Friends of Uplands Park for Tree Appreciation Day. Learn about native plants, Uplands Park and invasive species. Enjoy refreshments and take atour of the park. Meet at the main entrance at Midland and Lansdowne 10 a.m. to noon.

Central Saanich will have its own Tree Appreciation Day. Tree and native shrub planting will be happening from 10 a.m. until noon at the Kennes Beach Access off West Saanich Road (next to Our Lady of Assumption Church). Bring your tools and gloves, but refreshments from the Central Saanich Lions Club will be provided. For more information, call 250 544 4218 or community.service@csaanich.ca.

If you’ve committed to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) but feel your resolve weakening, go to the Broughton St. branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library for a NaNoWriMo write-in from 1-3 p.m. It’s 50,000 words in 30 days; you’ll need all the motivation you can get.
