Village comes through for charity as lighted rigs roll through Oak Bay

Food and funds raised for Rainbow Kitchen in Esquimalt which serves about 10,000 meals a year

The Oak Bay BIA is particularly pleased with the community generosity displayed during the annual Island Equipment Owners Association truck parade and food drive that saw rigs bedecked in lights cruise The Avenue.

Branded as Oak Bay Village, the BIA organizes a food gathering each year at municipal hall as well as hosting a Realtor Food Bank Challenge. This year, the food and funds raised went to the Rainbow Kitchen in Esquimalt.

The municipal hall event during the Dec. 7 truck parade collected $660 and 600 pounds of food. The annual fun realtor competition raised more than $10,000 and 600 pounds of food.

“This spectacular display brought the community out in force and your generosity is changing lives in the community,” reads an Oak Bay Village social media post.

Specializing in programs that aim to strengthen food security on the south Island, Rainbow Kitchen features hot meals and food sharing. Each month, the organization serves about 10,000 meals and rescues roughly 10,000 pounds of food from growers, farmers and wholesalers to distribute market-style.
