Vigil honours victims of violence against women

The vigil will be held on the grounds of the B.C. Legislature from 5 to 6 p.m. Dec. 6

A candlelight vigil to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women will be held in Victoria on Dec. 6.

The vigil will be held on the grounds of the B.C. Legislature from 5 to 6 p.m. The event is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Organizers will be collecting donations of things such as socks, towels, toiletries, journals, children's games and toys and small household appliances, which will be given to various women's organizations in Greater Victoria. Everyone who attends is asked to bring at least one item for donation.

The National Day of Remembrance is observed by Canadians each year on Dec. 6 to mark the anniversary of the École Polytechnique Massacre, in which 14 women at a Montreal school were singled out for their gender and murdered.

The Victoria vigil is sponsored by the Victoria Regional Women's Committee of the Public Service Alliance of Canada B.C.
