Street soccer team hosts BBQ fundraiser

Victoria's growing street soccer team is holding a fundraiser this weekend, as it faces Victoria Fire Department on the pitch. The Victoria Dreams, made up of players who are or were on the street, and players with addictions, are hoping to raise enough money to make it to a street soccer tournament in Vancouver on June 4-5. There, they'll face off against street soccer teams from Kelowna, Vancouver, the North Shore and Calgary."This tournament is the first step in hopefully getting the Victoria Dreams to play in the Homeless World Cup, so we're asking the public to help us get to Vancouver by coming out on Sunday," said Victoria Street Soccer organizer Katie DeRosa. The fundraiser game will have a barbecue, bake sale and 50-50 draw while spectators watch the Dreams' diverse, co-ed team face off against firefighters. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday (May 8) at Victoria High. For more information, go to www.victoriastreetsoccer.com.
