A Saanich author’s latest work examines mental health issues as a woman fights to keep her head above water as her family begins to sink.

Desolation Sound by Marion Jensen, produced by FriesenPress, is a character-driven and engaging story about Ann Patterson, a quirky and curvy librarian who tries her best to keep her life and family together. Ann has lost her voice in her marriage, she battles her own weight problems, suffers the loss of her son, and discovers her daughter’s psychological issues.

Through all this and her personal vulnerabilities, Ann hopes that a trip to Desolation Sound will cure the family of its troubles and heartache, but it does not come close to her expectations. With the help of a ghostly adviser, none other than “Dictionary (Sam) Johnson”, Ann must face her own shortcomings and get a grip on the realities of her life.

“In creating Ann Patterson, the author has done a wonderful job of portraying a woman readers will relate to,” said one Amazon customer. “Ann is only too aware her life isn’t what she’d like it to be and that she’s far from perfect. Hard as she tries, she can’t resist calorific treats or speaking her mind. And she can’t recapture the magic that once existed between her and her difficult husband. She hopes their trip to B.C.’s beautiful Desolation Sound will change things - and it does. But not remotely in the way she imagined.”

Desolation Sound is available locally at Ivy’s Book Shop and Tanners Bookstore in Sidney, and for order from most major online book retailers including the FriesenPress Bookstore and Amazon. The eBook is available for Amazon Kindle, iTunes Bookstore, Chapters/Indigo Kobo, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, and GooglePlay. This book is also currently being featured in the Greater Victoria Public Library’s Emerging Author program.
