Rugby club to aid earthquake victims

Castaway Wanderers invite public to Windsor

In support of victims of the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, Oak Bay’s Castaway-Wanderers Rugby Club will donate the proceeds from their Saturday game at Windsor Park.

CW host Vancouver’s Meralomas for a first division game at 1 p.m. and a premier match at 2:45.

“We hope to get $1,500 to $2,000 from our gate and our big 50-50 event this week,” said CW spokesperson Matt Gordon.

The club is using a connection with the New Zealand Rugby Union to choose a worthy group in the Christchurch area.

To raise more money, members from all facets of the club, players young and old, parents and alumni gathered on Thursday night at CW’s historic clubhouse on Discovery Street.

“We’re running a 50-50 contest. People can bid on the player they think will score the first try (in the premier game) on Saturday.

“It’s a show of rugby brotherhood to do what we can,” Gordon said.
