The Canadian Coast Guard once again invited Greater Victoria residents to its downtown base Saturday (June 3) as part of the annual Coast Guard Days.
Set up throughout the sprawling dockside base were examples of just about everything the coast guard does in Canadian waters to help keep mariners and the environment safe.
Information booths, coast guard personnel, and equipment from all areas of the organization’s work were on display at the base, ranging from helicopters to small motor boats, to the massive ship CCGS Sir Wilfred Grenfell and a Vancouver-based hovercraft. The organization’s environmental spill response work, remote communications, and radar stations were also on display.
Long lines formed for the most popular interactive exhibits, which included tours of the Grenfell and a chance to sit inside one of the base’s helicopters, while kids flocked to the activity stations – with the sound of a hand-operated horn sounding throughout the day as guests discovered they could pull the lever to sound it themselves.
Coast Guard Days were started in Victoria in 2022 to coincide with the coast guard’s 60th anniversary and the official welcome of the Grenfell into West Coast service.
