Katrina Pavlovsky sees the world reflected through movement.
“The rhythms of the world are echoed in dance,” she says. “There are fluid motions of a raindrop over a flower petal, and there are the sharp contrasts in texture and colour as well. The world is full of contrast and motion.”
As much as Pavlovsky has found joy in reflecting the natural world through movement and dance, she has recently discovered an equally passionate venue for her love of the natural wold.
She’ll bring that vision and philosophy to a display of photographic art scheduled to run the month of November at the Greater Victoria Public Library (Oak Bay branch), 1442 Monterey Ave.
The display is described as a bold, beautiful and inspired statement of nature and the sacred.
It may seem strange to some that Pavlovsky has chosen still photography to reflect her almost spiritual concept of movement, but she sees it as a natural medium in keeping with her love of the natural world.
“In a photograph I can capture the texture and interplay of light and shadow in a flower and the sharp edges and contrasts of trees and rock,” she says. “I create images in dance and a sense of movement in my photographs.”
Pavlovsky has been honing her ability to capture her vision of the natural world in photographs for five years. She has exhibited at the LOOK show and as part of Monday Magazine’s photo contest but this is the first dedicated public showing of her work.
While the display of her photography is exciting for Pavlovsky, she hasn’t abandoned the love of movement and music that has always defined her life.
Since relocating to Victoria from Toronto in 2007, Pavlovsky has continued to work with both children and adults as a creative movement/dance teacher, and has started a chair dance/movement class for seniors with physical challenges.
