Oak Bay scouts fundraise for epic adventure on Yukon rivers

10 scouts set to travel the waters this summer

After years of gathering and travel restrictions, Oak Bay scout leaders plan to take 10 kids on an epic adventure in the Yukon.

The 5th Garry Oak Scout group is planning eight days on the Teslin and Yukon rivers this summer.

The group will fly Air North to Whitehorse, then head out on the the Teslin River and cruise down to where it intersects with the Yukon River – emerging from that river at Carmacks north of Whitehorse.

The goal is to, says scout leader Keith Dodd, “stimulate everyone’s imagination on what’s possible outdoors” and make it a highlight of their summer.

“They’re at an age they can do a trip like this. It’s a trip adults would talk about.”

It builds on last year’s five-day trip to Sayward Lakes Canoe Route – a multi-day trip near Campbell River – when the kids and leaders paddled every day and scored stunning weather for the duration.

Now they’re out on the water a lot, training, certifying everyone. The goal is to get them all Paddling Canada flatwater and moving water certifications. The river route selection fits into the age and competencies of the group.

The plan to pay for the adventure includes social media and the kindness of local businesses.

Air North has already kicked in with discounted tickets and a donation-in-kind.

“We said we’d wear any branded gear they have, and we’ll take pictures for social media,” Dodd said.

Residents can get in on the action by saving their returnables for a scout bottle drive planned for April 16.
