Oak Bay High singers croon to swoon this Valentine's Day

Send a song, flower and chocolate for school fundraiser

Students crooning a song of love has become a fond tradition in Victoria. Each year Oak Bay High choir members don their finest duds and head out for Valentine’s Day serenading folks in banks, schools and even the occasional dental office.

“We’ve gone to dentists, we’ve gone to restaurants, schools are some of the fun ones,” choir teacher Tina Horwood told the Oak Bay News.

The annual Love-A-Grams fundraiser sees students in groups of two to four, sing a song, deliver a rose, chocolates and – if requested – a personal note, for $40.

This year the singers have mastered the song It’s been a long, long time – an oldie folks of a certain age might know, revived in popularity by its appearance in the end credits of the 2019 movie Avengers: Endgame.

Feb. 14 falls on a professional development day this year, meaning students aren’t even skipping classes on the Friday that leads into the Family Day long weekend.

The funds raised support Oak Bay High’s Choir Concert Tour to Manitoba and Senior Vocal Jazz’s trip to the Townsite Jazz Festival.

“The kids doing the actual work are the ones who benefit,” Horwood said.

Those looking to order a Love-A-Gram can order online at goto.now/9ad1h, or in person at the school office, 2121 Cadboro Bay Rd.
