HMCS Oriole’s new skipper had hoped to cross the finish line ahead of his father in last weekend’s 68th annual Swiftsure yacht races.
Cmdr. Jim Sprang, who last month took command of the navy’s 90-year-old sail training vessel from Lt.-Cmdr. Erik James, faced light winds on Saturday.
Oriole, a ketch-rigged ship, did not finish the Swiftsure Lightship Classic race.
His father, Roger Kibble, skippered the 10-metre sailboat, Electra, to 33rd place in the Cape Flattery race.
