Lost wedding ring found on Valentine’s Day

Dan Milbrath’s ring is back where it belongs

Dan Milbrath called it a Valentine’s Day miracle—he found his wedding ring.

Despite melting almost all the snow in his yard during a three-day search, Milbrath can’t take all of the credit for the discovery.

It was his friend Chris Sibbald who found it using a metal detector. It was the second time metal detectors were brought in to help.

“I turned around and he was holding it, I spent so many hours looking for that thing,” Milbrath said. “We ended up melting this huge area, and it was just on the outskirts of where we melted last night. It was out on the boulevard almost.”

Milbrath lost his ring flinging snow out of his car Feb. 11, just as the big snow storm was getting underway.

He’s not too sure how much time was spent looking for it. He said that himself and his wife Sarah spent four or five hours melting snow and searching for it the night it was lost. Then every night after they would keep looking. While he was at work, Sarah would look for it with the help of their daughter. Sarah even brought in two men with metal detectors to help look on Feb. 12, after asking for help on Oak Bay Local.

Rather than finding a ring, the initial attempt with metal detectors found multiple old nails in the yard of the Milbrath’s 1930’s era Oak Bay Home, digging up a large portion of their yard in the process.

It got to the point where the Milbraths were opening up fence panels looking for the ring, which was eventually found just outside their primary search area.

Milbrath said that Sarah wasn’t too mad at him about the loss, because he lost the ring trying to help her clear their driveway.

“We were in it together,” Milbrath said. “If I had done it on my own I definitely would have been in the dog house.”

The Milbraths would like to thank the community for their help in the search. Sarah’s post on Oak Bay Local led to multiple volunteers offering suggestions and help over the three days the ring was lost.

“It was a team effort trying to find this thing,” Milbrath said. “It was amazing just seeing the community response.”
