It’s time to rummage through those closets

Monterey rummage sale looking for donations

Although it’s her first time corralling more than 100 volunteers for the annual Monterey Centre rummage sale, Camille Wood says it’s no big deal.

“They know what they’re doing and I basically listen to them,” she says.

The sale is set for Saturday, Feb. 26 and proceeds go toward purchasing capital items for the centre.

Last year more than $8,000 was raised from the four-hour sale of bedding, linens, artwork, clothing, electronics, kitchenware and more. “But absolutely no sports equipment,” says Wood.

The sale is hosted by members of the Oak Bay seniors activity association, affiliated with Monterey recreation centre. Donations will be accepted at the centre, 1442 Monterey Ave., starting Monday, Feb. 21. Furniture is also accepted – volunteers will pick up larger items on Feb. 23.

A team of 16 volunteers will work seven hours a day to sort through items and prepare the tables. Each of the 13 sale tables, or “booths” has a leader and a dozen volunteers assigned to it for the sale – a virtual army of 150-plus volunteers.

Last year sale profits bought new furniture for the centre’s atrium lounge.

This year some of the funds will go toward a new sound system.

The sale runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
